I was once you. It was 1985 and I had just graduated from the University of Southern California. Like you, I was dreaming of being a TV Reporter. I was enthusiastic and idealistic. I just wanted a news director anywhere to call me and say, "come join our team." I was young and single and money didn’t matter that much. I just wanted to get my foot in the door.
My first job? Market #165 Idaho Falls, Idaho: My starting salary was $16,500. That's 1988 dollars, but $16,500 is not much money in any decade.
After four years at USC, and multiple internships in L.A.'s biggest newsrooms, I thought I was ready. But on day 1 in the Idaho wilderness, I quickly realized I didn't know as much about Electronic News Gathering as I thought.
Suddenly, I was tasked with finding stories, shooting stories, writing stories, editing stories, and getting them all mircro-waved to the main station in Pocatello. I was suddenly face to face with Deadline Pressure, threats of lawsuits and confrontational interviews.
My 1st month as the Idaho Falls Bureau Chief covering Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, was the college equivalent of a 2 year's Masters Program.
From Idaho, I moved to Eastern N.C. where I fine-tuned my craft and learned to work with an array of police officers. This is where I became a crime reporter and learned that cops won't give you news unless they trust you.
And because News is a passport to places near and far, I had the experience of a lifetime flying to Saudi Arabia in the back of a KC-10 tanker plane covering Operation Desert Shield during the 1st Gulf War in 1990.
Seeing the Great Pyramids from a mile up while refuelling a fighter jet is quite a memory!
From N.C. I traveled to Grand Rapids Michigan where northern winters can test even the bravest journalistic souls.
And since 1996, I've been running and gunning at the abc affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee.
Practically every day I break News. I expect to. It’s my job to illuminate my community while holding the powerful accountable.
I love being a TV Reporter. I think you will too!
It’s a run and gun lifestyle with immense responsibilities, never ending deadlines and crazy stress.
My course will help you conquer these issues by teaching you to develop a brand that sets you apart from the herd.
I always Dare To Be Different.
I will teach YOU to do the same.
News is hard. But it’s also fun and exciting. It is the only job protected by the 1st amendment! Think about that. The first amendment!
I want the best journalists to take the news-baton and carry our profession forward. That’s why I have created this course so you can be the best reporter possible.
